There are undoubtedly many things in our family home which are valuable and priceless. But the one thing that is incomparable to anything else is an original masterpiece by Sardar Kirpal Singh. It is a painting of Guru Gobind Singh ji in the jungles of Machhiwara. This was after he had sacrificed his entire family against the Mughals and depicts the gloom and sadness that fills the universe which has witnessed such a Supreme sacrifice. This painting was made by Sardar Kirpal Singh in the year 1952. The famous painter was my grandfather’s friend and the painting was done during one of his visits to our house. Since then it has been with our family and today it adorns one of the walls of our drawing-room. It is very special to all of us because it is an original artwork by one of the famous painters and as such is priceless. But more important is that it captures the poignancy of the situation through the depiction of Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s posture and also the use of colours which add to bring out the pain of loss yet complete surrender before the will of God. The portrayal of Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s resting on the ground in the Jungles of Machhiwara is enough to evoke so many emotions in the mind of the onlooker. The gloominess has been well captured and one cannot help but admire the artist who has successfully been able to bring out the pain of loss and separation. Everyone who visits the house is full of admiration for the painting. It is one proud possession that I ll like to keep in my family forever.
