It has been seen that an increasing number of parents are giving electronic gadgets to their offspring because they believe that this will teach their children new technological skills. This essay will argue that despite being the benefit of children are apt to new technology, the drawback of a less focus on studies far outweighs any benefit.
The primary advantage of using electronic gadgets for children is that they learn new skills quickly. This is to say that constant exposure to computers and tablets make them familiar with different types of applications and they learn how to use them automatically. For example, a recent study by Cambridge University found that 40% of people who were allowed to use laptops in at a young age became proficient in the computer before they attained adulthood.
The major disadvantage of allowing children to use electronic devices is that it actually distracts children from their studies. This is because when children are given these gadgets, they rarely use it to study or learn something new. Mostly, they play games on these devices and waste an enormous amount of time which should have been used for studying their school subjects. To illustrate, when I allow my daughter to use my computer for study, after few minutes she starts playing games on it and therefore, I think practically it does not help to focus on study.
In conclusion, a distraction from the study is the main demerit when children use computers and tablets, which far outweighs the supposed merit of learning new technologies.
