Some people think that development of technology helps to reduce crime, while others think that it encourages crime.
Discuss both views and give your opinion.
It is argued that recent advancements in technology enabled authorities to curb crime, however, others believe that this encourages people to commit crime. While with the help of modern technology security officers can easily capture criminals, I believe that this trend has raised crime because of increased unemployment.
On the one hand, with the use of the latest technology, it has become much easier to track down culprits who committed crime. This is because authorities install CCTV cameras which are equipped with facial recognition technology. This helps officials to capture criminals and this results in to reduce crime. To illustrate, a recent study by Cambridge University found that cities where modern surveillance techniques were used to control crime had much lower crime incidents. However, I do not agree with this statement because of the reason elucidated below.
On the other hand, the advancement in technology has increased crime in reality because people are not able to find work. This is because multinational companies extensively use artificial intelligence and robots at their workplace. This leads to increased unemployment, and the unemployed people tend to commit crime to feed their families. For example, The New York Times recently reported that in the US, robberies and hacking of banking systems are committed by people who are expelled from work as their jobs are taken over by technology. Therefore, I agree with this school of thought because many people are expelled from work, and therefore, they commit crime to earn bread and butter.
In conclusion, although modern technology helps officers to find criminals easily, I believe that this advancement has unemployed many workers and this lead to increase in crime rate.
