Some businesses observe that new employees who just graduated from a college or university seem to lack the interpersonal skills needed for communication with their colleagues.
What could be the reason for this? What solutions can help address this problem?
Many companies analyze that new workers who have just left their college or university are deemed to have a paucity of interpersonal communication skills to interact with other employees. This essay believes that the primary reason for this phenomenon is more theoretically focused education and introducing monthly competitions at college is the most viable solution.
The main reason for having a lack of communication skills among the new workforce is that their study involves more theory than actual work-related skills. This is to say that universities have a set curriculum to impart knowledge from theoretical books about certain subjects of a particular field, whereas they give very little importance to work-related skills. This results in students not being able to interact effectively with someone. For instance, it has been shown in a recent study by Cambridge University that students who only studied through books’ knowledge were 42% less likely to interact well at job interviews.
The most appropriate solution for this is to organize competitions among students while study. This is because if students are involved in any competition where they have to give presentations on a certain topic solely or as a team member, then it is highly likely that this practice significantly enhances their communication skills and boosts their confidence. Therefore, involving learners in competitive events at college is a preferable school of taught. Personally, I had to take part in monthly presentation competitions while my university education and it had effectively improved my communication ability.
In conclusion, new employees do not have effective interpersonal skills to interact with their colleagues because of more theoretical subjects in their curriculum and the plausible solution is to organize some competitions to enhance their soft skills.
