As housing is a basic need for people, the government should provide free housing for everyone who cannot afford it.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
It is said that the house is essential for every person therefore authorities must build houses and allocate to people who cannot afford to own a house. This essay disagrees with this statement because providing a house free of cost cannot solve the problem why they are unable to build their own one and this will be a financial burden on them.
Firstly, providing jobs to underprivileged people is a much better approach than giving them shelter free of cost. This is because a job makes people self-dependent and they can buy anything as per their will. In this way, they can take better decisions for their life. For example, a recent survey by Cambridge University found that nearly 10% of poor people want that they would like to have a better employment opportunity over a house for free.
Secondly, owning a house means extra expenses on people that they have to bear. This is because the owner of a house pays electricity bill, water bill, gas bill and so many other charges. Therefore, if unemployed people are handed over a house, this leads to soon they will be under debt. For example, I personally witnessed some people who were allotted a government house under a national scheme, and they could not cope with the extra expenditure of the house they owned.
In conclusion, the state should not focus on providing free housing because creating job opportunities will enable people to buy their own home by themselves, and unemployed people cannot cope with the expenses of a house.
